Recently I came across a video on a website from someone I’d met a few months ago. The video was beautiful. The concept was solid. The page layout was magnificent. The business owner looked beautiful: she’s quite photogenic.
However, the video was painful to watch. The business owner was obviously a little shy. Her voice settled into a monotone as she talked. She wasn’t enthusiastic. And the video went on… and on. At least that’s how it seemed to me.
What can you do?
(1) Take a class in acting, improv or stand-up comedy, where you learn to use your voice on a platform. Toastmasters and other clubs often focus more on structure, especially leaving out the “ums” and “uhs.” You need to focus on charisma. When you engage your audience, they won’t be counting the “ums.”
(2) Get someone to interview you. A good interviewer will help you relax and open up. You might even laugh and joke a little
(3) Create an action script where you’re not a talking head. You tell a story or walk someone through a series of actions.
