Developing Your Copywriting Project For A High-End, High-Priced Product

crownRecently a consultant asked if I’d like to write a sales letter for a new product, with a price point of $797. In his market, that’s a high-end product, calling for a long sales letter.

My client was puzzled when I suggested a quote.

“I just need a few paragraphs,” he said. “That’s what I see among my competitors.”

The competition

So I asked for a sample of what his competitors were doing. He sent 3 examples.

— One competitor sent a short press release type announcement for an upcoming $27 workshop.

— One competitor had a series of low-end products ($37 and under), listing all on one page with a short blurb about each.

— One competitor offered a comparably priced product with a video and a fairly short sales letter.

Good free video: Grow your list by sharing content

A lot of pitches promise to give you information if you just listen to a video. Five minutes can seem like an eternity when you’re on the wrong end of a sales spiel.
I just wrote about that yesterday.

In contrast, check out this video by Don Crowther. I hadn’t heard of him before this. His video gives a clear, straightforward step-by-step method to use video to grow your list and gain visibility, using social media. It’s a good model to follow and it’s really original – all about content sharing. The idea is that you create a handful of videos. You distribute them via Facebook, Youtube and your blog – i.e., a membership site. You follow a sequence of steps so you don’t overwhelm your prospects.

The video doesn’t downplay the work involved. You have to invest in some equipment and software. You have to invest some time. But you do get a strategy, which you can modify if you choose.

Don’t Bite These Bullets!

spiral-pencilsTo a copywriter, a bullet is a short sentence or phrase that communicates a promotional idea. Typically you see bullets highlighted with bullet points (small dots), as they would appear in a written business memo. You will also see bullets highlighted with arrows, stars, asterisks, and even special symbols.

The graphic you choose doesn’t matter as long as it doesn’t draw attention away from the words of the bullet. For instance, a restaurant probably should avoid using pieces of fruit to highlight bullets; a dog trainer would be advised to avoid highlighting key points with images of dog bones.

When you study copywriting, you will discover many ways to write bullets. You can begin a bullet with “How to…” or, “Discover why…” However, nearly all bullets can be analyzed as a dynamic combination of features and benefits. Two formats you can use are:

Benefits (because) Features

Examples:

Your dog stops chewing shoes *because* you use our unique Canine Awareness techniques

You begin to reduce your debt *because* you learn to reprogram your relationship with money.

Features (so that) Benefits

Examples:

Learn three Canine Training Commands *so that* your dog stops chasing motorcycles as if they were sheep.

Gain an understanding of your own spending patterns *so that* you begin paying off your debt without effort.

Are you a sought-after podcast and telesummit guest?

Speaking on a Blog Talk Radio program, network radio program or teleseminar can introduce you to dozens, perhaps hundreds, of potential prospects. Here are some ways to be a perfect guest and maxmize your impact.

(1) Be ready when someone calls. Have a topic ready to go. Most hosts will want to see 10 questions and a brief bio with a photograph of you. Even if you won’t be seen, they may want to use the photo on their own public relations materials. Have an opt-in page set up with a URL that’s very easy to say aloud, spell and remember.

Now you are ready to go. More than once I’ve had opportunities to speak on shows because I was available as a last-minute replacement. When you can say “yes” without hesitation, more doors will open to you.

(2) Ask directly, “What can I promote? And when?”

Naturally you want to promote your own business, but hosts have different rules. Ask exactly what you can and cannot do on the show. For example, my own rule is, “We will talk for 30-40 minutes with absolutely no selling – solid content. Then you get 5-8 minutes for a soft sell. We return to content and you get a last word at the end of the call.”

They may allow you to promote yourself only if they get affiliate commission or they may decline to participate in your offer. They may allow you to promote only free giveaways or they may expect you to make a special offer for audience only..

If the host says, “I want to promote through my affiliate links,” pay attention. Do not send the audience to any other URL. Do not promote any additional products or services, even if you get a question that seems to relate to other products.

Never promote your appearances on other shows or programs unless the host specifically asks you to do so. That’s incredibly rude: you are using your host’s show as a platform to promote yourself! For now, you have one host and one commitment.

(3) Clarify your role ahead of time. Every so often a host will simply hand over the microphone (virtually!) and say, “Go ahead and speak.” At other times the host will want to have an informal Q&A. Some hosts will be open to changing their format; however, they know their audiences. If they want a Q&A, don’t arrive with 17 pages of single-spaced notes that you will read.
