A few years ago sociologist Arlie Hochschild published a book, The Outsourced Self. She explored the growing trend to hire others to do things that we formerly took care of ourselves. We work with wedding planners, dating coaches, and even paid friends . She suggests that our lives were more genuine and authentic when we either did these things ourselves or got a family member to help.
