You’ve probably heard this a million times. Maybe you said it yourself.

“I hate to write about myself.”

What this usually means is, “I hate to write GOOD THINGS about myself. Bring on the bad stuff!”

So we tell stories that are truly upsetting and cringeworthy. Everything from the time you made a big mistake in your business to the time you flubbed a word in a third grade spelling contest. Then there are the personal stories (even more horrifying).

The truth is: your audience doesn’t want to hear these stories. They want to hear the good stuff. They want to hear about the time you won a big award or a big account. 

But most importantly, they want to hear how you helped other clients reach success. They want to believe you can do the job.’ You have the expertise and experience.

They do want you to be approachable — up to a point. They have to talk about the worst moment in their lives. They want you to listen without judgment.

But that’s all they want: reassurance. They don’t want to hear about the times you messed up.

They want reassurance that you’ll solve the problem. That’s expertise and experience. 

And they want reassurance that you won’t be judgmental. That’s empathy.
