Today I got one of those messages I dread from new LinkedIn connections.
It was along the lines of, “Hi Cathy! I may need a copywriter someday for me or one of my clients. Can we jump on the phone and talk about what you do?”
So what’s so bad about this message?
For one thing, there are ways to check somebody out before getting on the phone.
But most of all, I’ve learned to be skeptical of the power of “someday.” It’s a science fiction version of elastic time that stretches till it breaks. By the time “someday” comes, the world will be different. Whatever we discuss today won’t be relevant. We feel productive but we’ve just wasted time.
Over the years I’ve had projects on the “someday” list and worked with clients who did, too. Some projects were better off disappearing into the sunset.
But some would have brought in significant revenue if they were finished.
The truth is, these projects don’t stay on the “someday” list because people are lazy. It’s because they need a few key pieces of information, “next step” tips, or feedback on a draft.
So the project goes into a virtual drawer until we get around to finding help. In one case, I completed a “someday” project after getting an unexpected guide from one of my vendors. Once I realized what I needed…the project finished itself.
What if you have a complex challenge, such as creating a course or a website? You have many points where it’s easy to get stuck…especially if part of the project involves copywriting.
I’ve just updated my program for business owners whose “someday” project would bring in a significant chunk of revenue…if it were finished. The problem is, when you’re busy, it’s hard to stop at each challenge point and search for answers.
