Many years ago, back when I had “real jobs,” I worked for a group that hired a couple of writing consultants. Somewhere they found two unemployable English majors with little business experience but giant egos. These newcomers eagerly reviewed memos and reports, slicing and dicing, with more red ink than you’d find on a college student’s “C” paper.
Alas, these “experts” were phony. A few of us (veterans of college newspapers and professional writing gigs) immediately recognized the signs. These experts promoted four-syllable words. They encouraged everyone to be formal, even stuffy. They scared away a lot of. good writers.
Unfortunately, many talented business owners find themselves falling into the same trap. When they need to undertake content creation – anything from a blog post to an all-out launch program – they get advice from people who haven’t studied business writing.
Or they get visits from the ghost of their third-grade teacher (who told them never to start a sentence with “Or,” “And,” or “But”).
Worst of all, they get scared. And nervous writing tends to be stuffy, formal, and boring.
Banish the Ghosts And Reframe Your Writing Activities
Dennis Becker has some of the most creative writing tips I’ve seen anywhere. His tips are targeted to kindle authors, but will be valuable for any for of writing. He shows you how to trick your mind into writing more quickly, why outlining backwards is the key to successful writing, and even a formula for writing faster.
I’m using the tips from my review copy to work on two big projects; even though I’m an experienced writer, I’m getting more done, more easily. If you’ve got a writing project scheduled, download these “writing cheats” here.
(5) Explore story-centered copywriting. That’s what we’ll talk about more on Thursday when we focus on storytelling to create bullets. Click here to learn more (and yes, the webinar will be recorded and available to those who register).
And if you’d like to develop your own writing, but want some support along the way, let’s set up a consultation where we can work together.
The arrangements are flexible. Your consultation will be customized to what you need most, right now, and what you’d like to walk away with. You supply the questions, challenges and problems. I’ll supply experience, expertise, and structure. We’ll create content from scratch, brainstorm ideas, and/or do a deep dive into whatever’s going on with your copywriting or any aspect of your marketing. Start here and we’ll get it done.
